About

Before the algorithm served up city pop revivals, tofubeats was building that feeling from scratch in his Kobe bedroom. He emerged from the foundational Japanese netlabel scene, uploading tracks to Maltine Records and capturing a specific, internet-bred nostalgia years before it was a trend. His 2011 breakout, “Suisei,” a sublime, melancholic house collaboration with rapper Onomatope Daijin, was pure bedroom-producer magic that became a viral slow-burn. Since signing to Warner in 2013, Yūsuke Kawai has perfected his role as a pop revisionist, pulling J-pop legends, idol singers, and underground rappers into his orbit, always filtering their sound through his distinct lens of heartfelt, hook-heavy electronic music.
