Mägo de Oz

Most metal bands draw their fantasy from Tolkien; Mägo de Oz found theirs in Cervantes. From the suburbs of Madrid, drummer and visionary Txus di Fellatio began fusing the Celtic folk traditions of Galicia and Asturias with blistering hard rock in 1988. This wasn't just a gimmick; it was the foundation for sprawling rock operas. Their 1996 opus Jesús de Chamberí reimagined the life of Christ in a Madrid neighborhood, but it was 1998’s La Leyenda de La Mancha that cemented their legend. With its triumphant violin and flute runs, the single “Molinos de Viento” became an inescapable anthem for a generation of Spanish-speaking headbangers, proving the heaviest riffs could live inside a tavern folk song.
