Dropped on Positiva in 1997, its sublime flip of a Bob James piano loop gave the genre a soulful, cinematic sweep that still resonates. But to peg him as just a D&B legend is to miss the point entirely. He famously pivoted, releasing the 2001 hip-hop album Kaos and trading beats with titans like LL Cool J and Redman. Then he co-founded the seminal Breakbeat Kaos label with DJ Fresh, launching Pendulum into the stratosphere. He didn't just make a classic; he built worlds around it.
