Kiefer
About
Some musicians chase a sound; Kiefer chases a feeling, and he finds it where the LA beat scene bleeds into the city’s live jazz revival. You can hear the whole lineage in his fingers: the unquantized ghost of J Dilla’s swing, the deep harmonic knowledge of Bill Evans, the sun-drenched funk of his Stones Throw labelmates. A UCLA Jazz Studies alum who came up alongside Mndsgn and famously gave piano lessons to Kaytranada, Kiefer’s work—from his 2017 Leaving Records debut Kickinit Alone to later LPs like Happysad—reframes the keyboard as the heart of the production. This isn’t technical showboating; it’s pure emotional transcription, mapping complex feelings into chord progressions that hit you right in the chest.
