Caifanes

Caifanes arrived when rock sung in Spanish was still a radical act, a battle against a deeply conservative cultural establishment. They rose from Mexico City’s underground in the late ‘80s, their dark, romantic gloom clearly indebted to British post-punk, but listen closer. On their 1990 classic El Diablito, Saúl Hernández’s incantations ride basslines that coil and sway with cumbia’s ghost. By El Silencio, produced by Adrian Belew in 1992, the synthesis was complete—the sound of a band inventing a new lexicon. It’s a language where Alejandro Marcovich’s jagged guitar on “Afuera” can stand alongside mariachi horns and indigenous percussion, blasting open a future for Latin American rock.
