What if you could hear Beethoven’s symphonies for the first time all over again? A protégé of the great Pierre Monteux, American conductor David Zinman forged his reputation by applying the rigors of historical performance practice to modern symphony orchestras. His long tenures with the Baltimore Symphony and especially the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich produced a landmark cycle of the complete Beethoven symphonies for the Arte Nova label in the late 90s. He stripped away the Romantic-era varnish, propelling the works forward with brisk tempi and a transparent, almost wiry energy. It was a revelation, forcing a generation to reconsider these canonical masterworks not as monuments, but as living, breathing arguments.
