Lykke Li

Long before pop went full-time sad, Lykke Li was building its cathedrals of heartbreak. She emerged from Stockholm's late-aughts indie boom with 2008’s Youth Novels, an album produced by Peter Bjorn and John’s Björn Yttling that swapped out guitar chords for stark percussion and raw-nerve confessions. That early blueprint—see the minimal thump of “Little Bit”—only grew more ambitious, culminating in the widescreen anguish of Wounded Rhymes (2011) and I Never Learn (2014). Across her catalog, from trap-inflected detours to bare-bones ballads, she treats melodrama not as a bug but as the main feature, a grand, necessary, and deeply human spectacle.
