No one has weaponized the cringe-to-catchy pipeline quite like Oliver Tree. He first surfaced from the Santa Cruz scene not as a pop star, but as a meticulously crafted piece of performance art—the bowl cut, the scooter, the JNCOs. But beneath the meta-trolling was a sharp songwriter who’d done a stint making glitchy IDM for R&S Records under the name Tree. He re-emerged with the character fully formed for Atlantic on his 2018 EP Alien Boy, nailing a perfect fusion of stuntman comedy and sticky alt-pop on tracks like “Hurt.” This formula culminated in his 2020 debut Ugly Is Beautiful and its TikTok-fueled megahit “Life Goes On,” proving the joke was always on anyone who didn't take the music seriously.
