Yo-Yo Ma

For Yo-Yo Ma, the cello has always been less an instrument than a passport. While his recordings of the Bach Cello Suites remain foundational, that profound mastery of the Western canon was merely a point of departure. His life’s work is one of radical curiosity, most famously channeled into the Silkroad Ensemble he founded in 1998 to convene musicians from Eurasian traditions. But he also took deep dives into American roots, joining bluegrass titans like Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer for the landmark 1996 album Appalachia Waltz.
