YACHT has always been more of a conceptual art project that happens to make brilliant pop music. The core duo of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans spent the late-aughts sharpening their critique of utopianism and corporate spirituality, landing on DFA Records for a run of taut, post-punk disco exemplified by "Psychic City." What began as an inquiry into belief systems has since blossomed into a full-on collaboration with artificial intelligence, using machine learning as a songwriting partner to generate the raw material for their Grammy-nominated 2019 album, Chain Tripping. It’s a decades-long mission: using the gloss of the dance floor to smuggle in heady questions about the future.
