Most people know the serpentine guitar lines Buck Meek winds through Big Thief, but his solo records are where you find the man himself, stripped down to a Texan twang and a kind of shaky, lovesick sincerity. On records like 2021’s Two Saviors and the more recent Haunted Mountain for 4AD, he gathers a crew including his brother Dylan Meek to sketch these tender, clear-eyed portraits of dive bar angels and roadside saints. He’s a masterful instrumentalist, sure, but here he proves himself a first-rate folklorist, trading Big Thief's squall for the quiet truths found only in a country song.
