For a generation, the sound of psychological dread wasn't a scream, but an Akira Yamaoka drum loop. As the composer and sound director for Konami’s original Silent Hill series, he built the games’ suffocating atmosphere from the ground up, fusing industrial clang, trip-hop swagger, and profoundly melancholic melody. He could conjure pure terror with the dissonant piano of Silent Hill 2’s “Theme of Laura” then pivot to anthemic dread-rock with vocalist Mary Elizabeth McGlynn on Silent Hill 3’s iconic “You’re Not Here.” It wasn’t just background music; it was the town's decaying, sorrowful soul made audible. Yamaoka gave the fog a pulse.
